Bill Nye on the Hill: Hearing on the Impacts of Climate Change on Homeland Security
(WASHINGTON) – On Tuesday, June 8th, the Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response, and Recovery, chaired by Rep. Val Demings (D-FL), will hold a virtual hearing to examine the impacts of climate change, including extreme weather events, and the implications for homeland security.
“Climate change is real, it’s dangerous, and we need to do something about it,” said Chairwoman Demings. “Our inaction is leading to stronger storms, rising floodwaters, spreading tropical diseases, and resource stress that will destabilize countries around the world. Fighting climate change is a homeland security necessity to keep all of us safe. I am pleased to announce a new hearing next week where we will be joined by scientific and emergency management experts to discuss the threat of climate change to our lives and safety, and what we can do about it.”
This hearing will be an opportunity for Members to ask expert witnesses about the significant risks of climate change, and the actions the Federal government – particularly the Department of Homeland Security – should take to address the challenges posed by climate change.
